Connection established in DBMS

Hi All,
We have about 40 ArcGIS Server instance (ArcSOC.exe) set using SDE direct connection.
ArcSDE version: 9.3.1
RDBMS: SQL Server 2005

As and when the map services(18 services-->total 40 instances) restart i see about 140 connections getting established in SQL server.
Can anybody help me understand how the ArcSOC instances and SQL server connections are related.

This increased number of connection is resulting in 'Maximum number of connections to instance exceeded' message to popup.
What would be the best way to handle this?
We did think of changing the connection value in giomgr.defs file. But i am unable to relate the creation of 140 connections for 40 instances. Is ther something i am missing out?

Automate Locks Management

Does anyone know of any way to automatically break user connections to an enterprise geodatabase?
We are trying to run some scripts overnight, but they need to acquire locks on certain datasets, and we have some users who leave connections open.

I'd like to find a way to break their connections without having to go through the manual process.

Thanks!

Checkout replica

I have a checkout replica that failed to sync.

If copy the geodatabase that's on the server, and then delete the data.

If I then copy the data from the checkout replica to the server, will it pull any other system tables with it into the database?

Is this okay to do?

Loading new layers into SQL with different projection

Currently we load weather-related polygons into SQL Server.

1. We download the shapefiles (only 3 files per shapefile: dbf, shp, and shx file). No spatial reference info.
2. Import the shapefile into a file geodb.
3. Add date fields and a couple other fields etc.
4. Load into SQL Server 2008.

The shapefiles have now changed. They are in a custom coordinate system. I am rewriting a python script. Would I need to first clear the projection of the new shapefiles or somehow reproject to no spatial reference?

If I clear the coordinate system of the new shapefiles, they display correctly in ArcMap compared to the previous shapefiles. Thank you!

I am new to SQL Server also.

Can ArcSDE 9.3.1 be installed and run on a system with ArcGIS Engine 9.3.0 installed

Our database is going to by upgraded to Oracle 11g, from Oracle 10G. Currently, our apps run under ArcGIS Engine 9.3.0,
ArcServer 9.3.0, and ArcSDE 9.3.0.

ArcSDE 9.3.0 doesn't support Oracle 11g, can we just install/upgrade ArcSDE 9.3.1 and leave the engine and the server at the version 9.3.0? Will this configuration work?

We don't need to upgrade any SDE database, or import/export any gis data, we will just create a new SDE database (9.3.1) from scratch.

Thanks

How exactly does geodatabase replication does this work?

$

Okay. So.

I just made 2 different checkout replicas from an Enterprise geodatabase, Replica1 and Replica2. They are full/complete data replicas.

I then did the following steps:

1) I made and saved a few edits to Replica1.
2) I deleted the original data from the Enterprise geodatabase
3) I copied the edited data from Replica1 into the now empty Enterprise geodatabase.
4) I versioned all the data.
4) I made and saved a few edits to Replica2.
5) I syncronized the edits from Replica2 to the Enterprise geodatabase

Now this all worked. Where exactly is the replica information being saved? Why am I able to delete the original data from the Enterprise geodatabase and copy the data from Replica1 and everything still works fine?

What's going on in the background? I don't really understand how it all works.

Thanks for any insight.

Unable to Edit 9.3.1 SDE with 10.2

I recently upgraded my ESRI to 10.2 from 10.1 and am now unable to edit my data in SDE. My data resides in 9.3.1 SDE and every time I try to edit a feature in 10.2, I get "The requested operation is invalid on a closed state. STATE_ID=358107"

This was not an issue in 10.1 and my other computer running 10.1 can edit the same data that I am unable to.

Has anyone come across this problem?

Thanks,

accidentally delete a colomn

Hi,

I accidentally delete a colomn via SSMS in a geodatabase layer that has already been registered as versioned.

1. Whats the correct way to restore it ?
2. Since its already been deleted, I might as well delete the related colomn in another table (possibly the A table) and a record in SDE_columnregistry. Is it correct ? Any other corresponding records/column i should delete ?

Thank you

Query Layer on PostGRES database using Intersection on local shapefile?

$

I have a large amount of data stored in a PostGRES database, that I have been able to access using a Query Layer through ArcMap. My first question is

a) Can the database be spatially queried using a local shapefile - e.g. SELECT FROM <PostGRES Table> WHERE <PostGRES geometry> INTERSECTS <localshapefile located in my C:\Temp>. I know that's not the actual syntax, but the main point is whether I can use a local file to do the querying or if it needs to be loaded into the PostGRES database.

and if this is possible - what would the proper syntax look like? Probably involving ST_INTERSECTS()...

Thanks,

How to automate an ID (Guid or sequence) without using the ArcMap Calculate Field

$

I found many exemples on how to calculate a field that contain an ID (sequence or GUID), but it was always with the field calculator, which means that it is calculed on time for all records.

What I'd like to do is, that everytime we create a new record, the ID field is automatically calculated.

Any Idea on how to do it ? Do I need to do a class extension ?

Thank you,

Nathalie

Merge Geodatabases or keep separate?

$

This may end up being a very elementary question...

I work in 3 states in New England and I have a geodatabase for each state (NH, VT, MA).

The feature datasets for each state are in different coordiante systems:
NH: NAD_1983_StatePlane_New_Hampshire_FIPS_2800_Feet
VT: NAD_1983_StatePlane_Vermont_FIPS_4400 (meters)
MA: NAD_1983_StatePlane_Massachusetts_Mainland_FIPS_2001 (meters)

The question is, should I continue to keep them separate or can I (should I) create one large geodatabase with all of my data?
At any given time, I could be working with all three datasets at the same time. I currently have an MXD set up for each state and I am most interested in calculating acreages of polygons and calculating the centroid lat/lons. I currently only have an ArcGIS Desktop license.

If anyone has any thoughts that would be great!

Thanks,

Jessica

Export from SDE to shapfile changes data type

$

Whenever I export a feature class from SDE to a shapefile it changes the short ints to long ints. In the field mapping during the export it shows short but it ends up as long after I actually export. This causes problems when I need to load data as i won't allow me to bring a long into a short. Has anyone else experienced this?

Uploading a feature class to an SDE 9.1 Enterprise geodatabase Need instructions.

Hello All,
I Need to upload new feature classes to the SDE geodatabase. I have the instructions for editing and thought it would be about the same just to upload or import a feature class but it did not work. I can see it in my editors connection but cannot see it using just my user connection. I asked someone else to access the dataset to see if they could see the new feature class, they cannot. I have asked several people that use the SDE in all departments and noone has a clue.
Thanks for any help,
Mary

'DBMS_PIPE' must be declared: 10.2 can't connect to my Oracle DB

$

Hello! Our IT group maintains three Oracle databases, dev/test/prod--separate from our SQL Server ArcSDE geodatabases. The Oracle databases have the SDE user and schema, but no sde service. We are preparing to upgrade our clients to ArcGIS Desktop 10.2, and have discovered the following error when trying to connect to IT's production Oracle database:

Failed to connect to the specified server. Do you want to continue? Underlying DBMS error[ORA-06550: line 1, column 44:
PLS-00201: identifier 'DBMS_PIPE' must be declared
ORA-06550: line 1 column 26:
PL/SQL: Statement ignored
No execute privilege for required Oracle builtin package DBMS_PIPE.
]

I can connect successfully in ArcGIS Desktop 10.0, but not 10.2--I see the known bug NIM085951, but that bug is specific to a SQL Server role, and this is Oracle.
What's next?

Thank you!

Performance Testing

Hi All,

I have two instances of the same virtual server running identical enterprise (SDE) geodatabases however they are located on two different networks. My task is to review the performance of the two networks and see if one performs better then the other.

Can anyone suggest a methodology for comparing geodatabase performance?

I am hoping to prove that one network will offer users a quicker inital connection speed to the GDB along with low latency for read/write tasks.

Cheers

David

I'm currently having difficulties moving files from a geodatabase to a regular file folder. My colleagues overseas are not able to open up anything in a geodatabase. How can I do this and/or automate the process?
